MARATHONS

#1

IF I DIE ON MARS

“3 volunteers for the Mars One programme, the 1st manned space flight to Mars – a one-way trip that’s effectively a suicide mission.”

Love, death, existentialism, celibacy, family, sex, spirituality and God. One of the best films I’ve seen so far this year.

#2

THE BUCKET BOARD

Mac Premo’s films are great in so many different ways: editing, cinematography, art, interview style, treatment of text on screen, pace… Here he tells the story of making skateboards out of buckets

#3

CHOP MY MONEY

A day in the life of 3 street kids in eastern Congo. These kids will probably end up in a ditch with a bullet in the head before they’re 18. So, in a sense, this film could be a tribute to their existence.

#4

ERISON AND THE EBOLA SOCCER SURVIVORS

In Sierra Leone, nobody is willing to hire survivors of Ebola. So Erison Turay and his friends said “fuck it” and created their own soccer team

#5

THE ART OF FIGHTING

Hussain Sadiqi, an Afghan refugee living in Australia, dreams of becoming Hollywood’s next Bruce Lee

#6

WITHDRAW

George Butler, a British reportage illustrator, captures the impact of everyday life in Afghanistan -not with a camera but- with watercolors. Peace, love and beauty in the middle of a war zone. Beautiful.

#7

OFFLINE DATING

“Last weekend in London, my single friend Tom challenged himself to find his next date OFFLINE.”

No Facebook, no Tinder, just the old school face to face

#8

PORTRAIT OF A DOG WALKER

This film pretty much says it all. A model of authenticity. I am in deep admiration

#9

THE BULL RIDER

Ah, my favorite film so far this year. Gary Leffew talks about the mystical dimension of bullriding. “When you clear your head of all conscious thought, you access the experience of 10,000 lifetimes.”

#10

MARK MAHONEY

Tattooist to Brad Pitt, Johnny Hallyday, muse to Lana Del Rey and friends with Johnny Depp, Mark Mahoney is a unique character in the Los Angeles landscape

#11

THE CINDER CONE

A tribe of skateboarders/carpenters get together to build the “ideal home” in Skamania County, Washington. The dream house of modern-day hippies. Nice.

#12

KING OF THE MOUNTAIN

Rwanda. In a country trying to get over the trauma of a genocide, the Rwandan national cycling team represents a lot more than sport. “The moment I saw those cyclists was the moment my life changed”

#13

IN GUNS WE TRUST

“Having a weapon in the house makes me feel more secure” Really? When you lose your temper, you’re more likely to shoot someone. When you’re depressed, you’re more likely to shoot yourself. I don’t see how this increases safety in any way.

#14

YOU WONT REGRET THAT TATTOO

Last film of this marathon. Tattoos are like scars, there is a story behind each one of them. Some are beautiful, some are painful, some are both.
